And with this precious cargo in their luggage, with this endless "hammering" of hits, where one beloved song follows another, the famous Brits come to Athens on June 23 and celebrate in the emblematic venue of Herodes Atticus the fifty years since their foundation: An exciting and stormy career in a night that will remain unforgettable, under the shadow of the Acropolis. A "Golden Anniversary" 50 years of musical history, 50 years of non-negotiable creation, innovation and unquenchable passion.

And as the countdown to this special night has already begun, JJ Burnel himself, founding member and legendary bassist of the Stranglers, sends his own message and positive vibes to the band’s fans – and invites us to meet at the Acropolis:

Half a century of unyielding rock ‘n’ roll
The Stranglers, one of the most iconic and influential bands in the history of rock ‘n’ roll, and at the same time one of the longest-running, remain truly unyielding.

They were born in September 1974 and were forged in the backstreets of British pubs, where the music was raw and the energy was unbridled. Their non-negotiable attitude was identified with the punk movement that was emerging at that time, but they were never limited to it. Their musicality, rich and multidimensional, surpassed any watertight, creating a sound that was completely their own – a sound that was never put into molds.

Their story began in an unknown musical town, Guildford, Surrey. From the very beginning, they charted their own authentic course, following an uncharted path, without compromise. Their first three albums ("Rattus Norvegicus", "No More Heroes", "Black and White") were released in just 13 months, giving them many successes and capturing their explosive energy and their ability to combine rawness and lyricism.
With a sound that combines melodic sensitivity and effortless elegance with a hard, dark aggression, the Stranglers are recognized today as one of the most original and influential bands to emerge from the punk vortex, but they were never limited to one musical style. In their universe, punk meets new wave, prog, art-rock, avant-garde and jazz, sharp rock meets atmospheric melancholy, dark lyricism and heartbreaking tenderness, creating a sound that is unique and unsurpassed. The Stranglers never followed the rules – they wrote their own.

A career full of unsurpassed songs

With more than 25 singles in the Top 40 and 18 albums that have left their mark on music history, the Stranglers continue to evolve. "Dark Matters", released in 2022, shot to No. 4 in the British charts, was recognized as their best work in decades, proving that their creative spark has never faded – on the contrary, it burns brighter than ever.

The Stranglers in Greece: A Decades-Long Relationship

Their first appearance in our country took place in 1985, at the legendary "Rock in Athens" festival in Kallimarmaro, in a concert that remains etched in the memory of those who experienced it. Now, 40 years later, they return to Athens, in a venue worthy of their history, to celebrate half a century of music and confirm that they remain true legends.

On June 23, 2025, The Stranglers will take to the Herodes Atticus stage for a unique concert-celebration, full of songs that have become soundscapes of memories and emotions, accompanying generations of listeners in moments of tension, passion and reflection.

Songs that continue to keep the flame of rock ‘n’ roll alive, to move, electrify and inspire. A landmark concert, in one of the most emblematic concert venues in the world.

Μισός αιώνας ανυπότακτου rock ‘n’ roll

Οι Stranglers, ένα από τα πιο εμβληματικά και επιδραστικά συγκροτήματα στην ιστορία του rock ‘n’ roll, και ταυτόχρονα ένα από τα μακροβιότερα, παραμένουν αληθινά ανυπότακτοι.

Γεννήθηκαν τον Σεπτέμβριο του 1974 και σφυρηλατήθηκαν στα στενά των βρετανικών παμπ, όπου η μουσική ήταν ωμή και η ενέργεια ανεξέλεγκτη. Η αδιαπραγμάτευτη στάση τους ταυτίστηκε με το πανκ κίνημα που εκείνη την εποχή αναδυόταν, αλλά ποτέ δεν περιορίστηκαν σε αυτό. Η μουσικότητά τους, πλούσια και πολυδιάστατη, ξεπέρασε κάθε στεγανό, δημιουργώντας έναν ήχο απόλυτα δικό τους – έναν ήχο που δεν μπήκε ποτέ σε καλούπια.

Η ιστορία τους ξεκίνησε σε μια άγνωστη για τη μουσική πόλη, το Guildford του Σάρεϊ. Από την πρώτη στιγμή χάραξαν τη δική τους αυθεντική πορεία, ακολουθώντας ένα δρόμο αχαρτογράφητο, χωρίς συμβιβασμούς. Τα τρία πρώτα τους άλμπουμ ("Rattus Norvegicus", "No More Heroes", "Black and White") κυκλοφόρησαν σε διάστημα μόλις 13 μηνών, χαρίζοντάς τους πολλές επιτυχίες και αποτυπώνοντας την εκρηκτική τους ενέργεια και την ικανότητά τους να συνδυάζουν ωμότητα και λυρισμό.

Με έναν ήχο που ενώνει τη μελωδική ευαισθησία και την αβίαστη κομψότητα με μια σκληρή, σκοτεινή επιθετικότητα, οι Stranglers αναγνωρίζονται σήμερα ως ένα από τα πιο αυθεντικά και επιδραστικά συγκροτήματα που αναδύθηκαν μέσα στη δίνη του πανκ, αλλά δεν περιορίστηκαν ποτέ σε ένα μουσικό ύφος. Στο σύμπαν τους το πανκ συναντά το new wave, το prog, το art-rock, την avant-garde και την jazz, το αιχμηρό ροκ συναντά την ατμοσφαιρική μελαγχολία, τον σκοτεινό λυρισμό και τη σπαρακτική τρυφερότητα, δημιουργώντας έναν ήχο μοναδικό και αξεπέραστο. Οι Stranglers δεν ακολούθησαν ποτέ τους κανόνες – έγραψαν τους δικούς τους.

Μία καριέρα γεμάτη αξεπέραστα τραγούδια

Με περισσότερα από 25 singles στο Top 40 και 18 άλμπουμ που σφράγισαν τη μουσική ιστορία, οι Stranglers συνεχίζουν να εξελίσσονται. Το "Dark Matters" που κυκλοφόρησε το 2022, εκτοξεύθηκε στο Νο.4 των βρετανικών charts, αναγνωρίστηκε ως η καλύτερη δουλειά τους εδώ και δεκαετίες, αποδεικνύοντας ότι η δημιουργική τους σπίθα δεν έσβησε ποτέ – αντιθέτως, φλέγεται πιο έντονα από ποτέ.

Οι Stranglers στην Ελλάδα: Μια Σχέση Δεκαετιών

Η πρώτη τους εμφάνιση στη χώρα μας έγινε το 1985, στο θρυλικό φεστιβάλ «Rock in Athens» στο Καλλιμάρμαρο, σε μια συναυλία που παραμένει χαραγμένη στη μνήμη όσων την έζησαν. Τώρα, 40 χρόνια μετά, επιστρέφουν στην Αθήνα, σε έναν χώρο αντάξιο της ιστορίας τους, για να γιορτάσουν μισό αιώνα μουσικής και να επιβεβαιώσουν πως παραμένουν αληθινοί θρύλοι.

Στις 23 Ιουνίου 2025, οι Stranglers θα ανέβουν στη σκηνή του Ηρωδείου για μια μοναδική συναυλία-γιορτή, γεμάτη τραγούδια που έγιναν ηχητικά τοπία αναμνήσεων και συναισθημάτων, συντροφεύοντας γενιές ακροατών σε στιγμές έντασης, πάθους και στοχασμού.
