Green Carnation – Norway, progressive metal

Green Carnation have never shied away from challenges in their musical career. After reaching new heights with the grand and somber first chapter of their long-awaited trilogy, “A Dark Poem,” the Norwegian prog bards now descend into deeper, darker, and more personal realms with Chapter II of this tale.

“We wanted A Dark Poem to start strong. Judging by the reactions, The Shores of Melancholia has managed to achieve that goal,“ says the band’s vocalist, Kjetil Nordhus. “But for Chapter II we have some very personal stories that we want people to hear. Sanguis invites listeners into the darkest chambers of our souls, through some of the most raw and vulnerable songs we’ve ever written.“

“The second part of A Dark Poem contains some of the most personal lyrics I’ve ever written,“ says the band’s bassist and main lyricist, Stein Roger Sordal. “They’re so personal that I struggled a lot with myself whether to tone them down or not. In the end, I chose to keep them as honest as possible. After all, I’m getting older and have some life experience to back them up.“

A Dark Poem, Part II: Sanguis“ is released on April 3rd via Season of Mist.

Founded in the early 1990s by Tchort, the original bassist of Emperor, Green Carnation quickly built a cult following, supported by critical acclaim for the one-hour album Light of Day, Day of Darkness, which remains one of the most ambitious in metal history. Current members Bjorn Harstad (guitar), Stein Roger Sordal (bass) and Endre Kirkesola (keyboards, producer), along with Nordhus, have been in the band since 2001.

The idea of a trilogy inspired by William Shakespeare’s Ophelia dates back to their earliest musings on life and death. But when the first part of A Dark Poem was released in 2025, it was immediately clear that Green Carnation had completed a true masterpiece. The Shores of Melancholia made the year-end lists of Loudwire, Angry Metal Guy and other major publications.

“Epic in both scope and sound – the latter being the band’s rich and melodic take on the genre, best described as if Rainbow’s Rising were a prog album,” wrote PROG magazine.
